Like television reruns, coffee can keep people up at night and frequently gets canned. Enjoy a fresh caffeine kick with today's Groupon: for $5, you get $10 worth of beverages and café fare at Julia's Coffee & Books at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
Winner of Creative Loafing's Best Coffee award in 2009, Julia's serves fair-trade coffee and café bites to sluggish bodies and minds while raising money for Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte in the process. As patrons browse the shop's sprawling collection of used books, baristas fill drink tanks with frothy lattes ($2.85/regular; $3.35/large), iced americanos ($2.05/regular; $2.35/large), and steaming mugs of brewed coffee ($1.65/regular; $1.85/large). Legume lovers can savor the grilled veggie-and-hummus wrap ($5.75) and the refreshing spinach, fruit, and nut salad ($7), whereas those looking to pack on protein after an afternoon of bench pressing bench-press salesmen can scarf down a cuban pork sandwich ($6).
Lovingly roasted in Durham and raised on a small farm in El Salvador, Julia's shade-grown, certified organic beans spread good cheer in two hemispheres. The shop pays more than the fair-market price for each pound of coffee, providing workers with a family-supporting wage and a family-sized bouncy castle. Meanwhile, many of the shop's edibles hail from local gastronome hangouts The Southern Gourmet and Blu Basil Café.
- The food is provided by The Southern Gourmet and Blu Basil Café, with a couple of panini's sic, sandwiches, and salads. Those who just want something simple to nosh on can enjoy muffins, bagels, and cookies. – Michelle Knop, Examiner
- It's fun to peruse the books, answer the daily trivia question or perch upstairs with your laptop. – Eric O., Yelp, 3/29/10
