Swing dance originated in the early 20th century, forcing the human species to grow opposable thumbs and hop out of their tree swings. Take advantage of the new human condition with today’s Groupon: for $12, you get a brief swing-dance lesson followed by a 3.5-hour open dance with live music at Jumpin’ Jive Swing Dance Club at the West Allis Knights of Columbus Hall in West Allis (a $24 value).
At 8 p.m. on the first Friday of every month (except July), eager couples of all ages can pick up a basic swing-dance lesson to sop up the rudiments of rocking, stepping, and levitating. Since the event is open to novice swingers and practiced lindy-hoppers alike, students need not fear being out-jitterbugged, and they can feel comfortable taking in the footy wisdom of Jumpin’ Jive's experienced swing instructors. After the half-hour lesson spins to a conclusion, newly confirmed swingsters have the option to utilize their recently acquired steps in an open-dance session until the clock strikes midnight. Each session features a different live band performing in various genres, ranging from blues and big band to pre-Baroque ska.
Jumpin’ Jive’s Maureen Majeski and Stephanie Wise combine years of experience, expert instruction, and a sincere love for swinging to mold a roomful of clumsy left feet into a dancehall of rhythmic right-footed Capezios. On the wide-open prairie of the Knights of Columbus Hall's spacious floor, dancers can make new friends or tread upon the feet of old ones while sweating, twirling, and burning enough calories to power a tiny hovercraft. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the live band kicks off at 8:30 p.m.
- I really appreciated the organization and instruction of the class. I liked how the moves were broken down step by step and how we learned them individually first, and then with a partner – it made me feel more in control and comfortable with the steps. – Play in the City
