Sensory deprivation chambers allow people to experience feelings of weightlessness without the subsequent feeling of dread that often follows after being thrown from a catapult. Feel a little lighter while staying on the ground with today's Groupon: for $25, you get $50 worth of sensory-deprivation floats at Just Relax Floatation, located within the MVP Athletic Club in Rockford.
Two 8-foot-long sensory-deprivation chambers host relaxing sessions of quiet meditation at Just Relax Floatation. For the meditative sessions, which can be purchased in single-hour increments ($40) or in hour bundles ($90 for three hours), 10 inches of water is heated to body temperature and infused with Epsom salts, cradling bodies as they float effortlessly on the surface like bits of cork- and helium-filled submarines. As restless minds grow accustomed to the isolation chamber, a parasympathetic response is able to kick in and heart rate, breathing, and muscles may relax. One of Just Relax’s two tanks is equipped with a video screen, giving clients the ability to enhance meditative states with a serene film such as The Exorcist, and newly buoyant organisms are welcome to slip into a weightless slumber with accompanying tunes emanating from built-in audio systems. In-room showers and changing areas await clients emerging from the calming cocoon of the deprivation tank.
