Kala is very gifted. I left the color decisions pretty much up to her- testing her creative visual ability. I have never felt so beautiful. Her color and placement choices were world class. I will be returning to her from now on. I recommend her work highly!

PROS: Stylist guidance: Kala is absolutely fantastic when it comes to talking through what you want. I wanted to change my cut and color and was new to both things I was trying to do. She didn't rush me or pressure me and really sought to understand what I wanted. She asked questions and answered mine and steered me to something that was new, but wouldn't be too drastic for me. I LOVED the resulting cut. The highlights were pretty close to what I wanted, but too gold and too symmetrical. CONS: Scheduling and fixes: My cut and color was Nov 16. I was unsure about the highlights, but Kala said they'd tone down so I went home and spent some time seeing if I'd like them. I decided I didn't, but it was Thanksgiving week and I was traveling and giving the hair some time to grow on me. I called on Dec 7 to make a "fix" appointment for Dec 14 (the earliest I could schedule). Someone else took the call. Dec 14 rolls around and I was home from work with a nasty germ. Called to reschuedule my appointment. Confirmed with Kala that it wouldn't cost anything because it was a fix and she said that I would have to pay the full rate again because it had been too long. Apparently giving it three weeks over the holiday to try to get used to it was beyond their policy. I was also accused of having rescheduled my first appointment. Still not sure how I was confused with someone else on that one. It also took me more than a week to schedule the first appointment because no one would answer my call or return my messages. I called at least three times and didn't get a response until I facebooked them. If you don't have any issues, Kala's great. If something doesn't work out, it's on you. Disappointed I won't be able to go back to this stylist.

Ombre Hair Coloring: The Lighter Side of Dark Roots

The ombre color trend has traveled from its Hollywood roots to the roots of clients across the country. Help your hairstyle graduate with Groupon’s introduction to ombre highlights.

Judging from recent red-carpet strolls, it might appear that A-listers from Keira Knightley to Drew Barrymore had forgotten to visit their colorists. Of course, like any element of a movie star’s appearance, the style isn’t accidental. It’s known as ombre hair coloring, taken from the French for “shadow” or “shade.” When done carefully, the gradual, gradient shadings of ombre coloring can imbue hair with a casually edgy aesthetic.

Though the ombre style is suited to complexions of all shades, only careful consultation with a professional stylist can determine which colors will flatter your look or career as a chameleon herder. For example, those with darker skin can shoot for deep reds and coppers, while fairer tones can experiment with blondes and caramel colors. Daredevils of all skin types can turn to unnatural hues such as pink and blue for a more dramatic effect.

After selecting your desired colors, the stylist will paint the darker shade onto the roots, and gradually transition to lighter hues towards the tips. Be forewarned that although the ombre look is similar to that of grown-out highlights, previously color-treated hair will often need at least some color correction to achieve the desired effect. Similarly, complex color combinations can require more frequent touch-ups to maintain this seemingly low-maintenance look. Color-treated shampoos and conditioners can help you get the most mileage out of ombre tresses, as can regular coats of gloss.
