About Kangaroo & Kiwi Pub
You can pick up on it as soon as you walk through the door—the unmistakable twang of an Australian accent. Keep your ears perked and you'll hear the American drawl peppered into conversations, along with the occasional New Zealand brogue. That's because, as owner Brad Howe explained to Seattle Weekly, Kangaroo & Kiwi Pub attracts transplants and locals alike. A real Aussie pub is "a place to get together with your friends whether things are going good or bad," he said. And thanks to his bar, "Americans who might not have necessarily seen that before have really embraced it."
The lively watering hole is housed in the historic Carnegie Public Library, a brick building with cavernous rooms and a wraparound outdoor patio. At the bar, barkeeps fill glasses with New Zealand wines and more than 15 local and imported drafts while others blend outback-inspired cocktails. Tables in the main dining room fill with American pub classics alongside Aussie meat pies, vegemite toast, and gravy chips. In the game room, guests compete over friendly rounds of shuffleboard, darts, and pool. Australian knickknacks and sports jerseys adorn the walls, and seven high-definition television sets broadcast southern-hemisphere sports.
