Contemporary Japanese cuisine menu boasts artful sushi rolls, salmon teriyaki & 14 types of sake

Like radioactive jewelry, sushi is more easily enjoyed when held at the end of two long sticks. Safely adorn taste buds with today’s Groupon: for $20, you get $40 worth of sushi, sake, and contemporary Japanese fare at Kansaku in Evanston. Yoon Jae Kim and Seung Joon Kim, the chefs who helm Kansaku’s kitchen, draw from 20 years of culinary experience and employ fresh fish delivered from overseas to build modern, architectural sushi rolls and Japanese entrees. Sleek, zen-inspired décor lures guests into the dining room, where they can sip lychee martinis ($10) or Kurosawa sake ($17 for a 300-mL bottle) as crisp and cool as a head of lettuce wearing aviator sunglasses. Ten-piece rolls of Fiesta sushi ($14) regale taste buds with cilantro and jalapeños, and Dynamite maki ($14) surprises them with an explosion of baked scallops, mushrooms, and eel sauce. Those looking for warmer seafood can dive into a teriyaki made with grilled Alaskan salmon ($18) or observe as a lobster helps its grandmother across the street.

About KANSAKU

Upscale Japanese eatery Kansaku has attracted the taste buds of Zagat reviewers with its blend of sushi, traditional Japanese entrees, and Western-cooking styles. With à la carte nigiri and sashimi, chefs arrange morsels such as shrimp, smoked salmon, yellowtail, and snow crab artfully atop plates. More than 30 maki rolls bundle fish with spicy mayo, tempura, and tobiko, letting diners sample the sea without obtaining a degree in marine biology. During and after meals, glasses of wine, saketinis, and icy desserts satisfy cravings for sweetness after loved ones ship off to whittling camp. Kansaku’s interior designers have furnished the restaurant with wood and gold accents amid minimalist décor exemplified by a sleek sushi bar.

Their signature roles were great and unique (we loved Fiesta and Carnival). The chicken teriyaki entree was more than the usual saucy fatty chicken and rice -- there were vegetables with the chicken and we had the choice of black rice, which was a unique option and delicious. Sushi was fresh and proportions were generous.
