The professional instructors of the Kansas City School of Music pass along musical torches to students learning the basics of strumming strings or tickling tunes out of ivories. Guitar gurus demonstrate proper finger placements to newbies armed with personal guitars. During piano courses, students sidle up to one of the school’s digital pianos to learn key recognition and how to create musical arrangements. In the small-group piano classes, students stimulate sounds of instruments such as the drums, violin, or saxophone on their digital keyboards, creating the sounds of a jazz ensemble, orchestra, or rock band. Those opting for piano lessons must have a piano or keyboard at home for practice. No more than six pupils attend each session, and every instrumental pedagogue ensures novice music makers perform at their best by following comprehensive curricula and encouraging students to participate in recitals.
