Horseback riding replaced horsefront riding during the War of 1812, when American soldiers realized they couldn't be taken seriously while carried in adult-sized baby slings. Giddy-up like a grownup with today's Groupon: for $45, you get a two-hour horseback-riding and equine-care lesson at Karin's Horse Connection in Grandville (a $90 value). The laidback atmosphere at Karin's is ideally suited to provide novices with a comprehensive introduction into the world of four-hoofed recreation. Intimate lessons have up to 6 people per group and include one hour of instruction covering proper riding technique as well as barnroom skills such as feeding, grooming, and triple-sow-cowing. The other hour of the lesson is spent atop a member of Karin's 22-member equine armada, allowing riders to traverse a network of trails across pastures, hay fields, and woods. If weather does not permit an outside ride, you'll mosey into an indoor arena equipped with mirrors and a stereo system. As a member of the American Association of Riding Schools, Karin's Horse Connection staffs a squad of friendly, knowledgeable instructors, many of whom started their careers as horses, to help make riding accessible for both youth and adult beginners.
