Horseback riding replaced horsefront riding during the War of 1812, when American soldiers realized they couldn't be taken seriously while carried in adult-sized baby slings. Giddy-up like a grownup with today's Groupon: for $25, you get either one 60-minute horseback-riding lesson or two half-hour children's lessons for kids 2–6 years old (a $50 value) at Karin's Horse Connection in Grandville.
The laid-back atmosphere at Karin's Horse Connection, located at Lamoreaux Ridge Equestrian Center, eases novices into the world of four-hoofed recreation. Intimate one-hour lessons cover proper riding technique in bareback, English, or Western style, as well as barn-room skills such as saddling, grooming, and triple-sow-cowing. Disciples clamber across pastures, hay fields, and woods astride a member of Karin's 22-member equine armada, which includes thoroughbreds and palomino quarter horses. During two half-hour sessions in the runt riders program, tykes ages 2–6 mount friendly steeds, which are safely reined about by an instructor, while prepping for careers in the time-travelling Pony Express. If weather does not permit an outside ride, members mosey into an indoor arena equipped with mirrors and a stereo system.
As a member of the American Association of Riding Schools, Karin's Horse Connection staffs a squad of friendly, knowledgeable instructors, many of whom started their careers as horses, to help make riding accessible for both youth and adult beginners.
