Many modern teenagers face a catch-22: their parents don’t trust them behind the wheel of a car, but they need the driving experience to become more trustworthy drivers. Russ Bond, a 30-year automotive industry vet, decided to remedy this dilemma. He started kartSTART.ca, a traveling, family-friendly go-kart program that reaches beyond the mere thrill of racing in fast gas-powered carts to also emphasize the fundamentals and physics of driving. “What we teach here is how a vehicle works,” says Bond on his website, “…we help teenagers prepare for the daunting task of driving on today’s roads with the masses.”
During full-day programs at speedways throughout Canada, future drivers can hop into a Toyota go-kart for three driving sessions and an array of safety activities and lessons. To simplify matters, the outing includes all of the equipment necessary for a safe and realistic driving experience, including helmets and built-in backseat drivers designed to second-guess every turn you make. Programs also include lunch and beverages.
