This is probably a Groupon best used by someone local. Katfam got the job done. My VHS-C tapes were all converted to DVD, but their service is not comparable to other conversion businesses I have used in the past.
First: they aren't really set up to deal with shipping. There is no protocol in place for them to collect your contact information. There is no place on the voucher that requests it. The voucher simply says: drop off your videos or send them to us; enjoy! EVERY OTHER CONVERSION SERVICE I HAVE USED INCLUDED FREE RETURN SHIPPING. This is NOT the case with Katfam. They serve a local area and likely have a lot of people dropping off videos. But if you ship them your videos, you don't just get to "enjoy" as the voucher states... you also have to pay for them to ship them back.
Second: because Katfam never asks for contact info, they never contacted me to let me know they got my videos. I HAD TO CALL THEM to ask the status of the order. I was a little upset that they could not tell me where the videos were at the time of my call. Martin promised a return call, but it never came. I called another day and a woman was able to find my videos.
Third: As mentioned before YOU PAY FOR RETURN SHIPPING
Fourth: The service offered is very basic. Other companies will label your DVDs with the same titles you had written on your tapes. Not so with Katfam. In fact, they combined several tapes onto a single DVD. THey wrote numbers on the tapes and copied those numbers onto the DVDs.
Fifth: most other services offer additional digital conversion so you get a copy of your tapes on a disc that allows you to edit the footage on a computer editing system. You can get this additional service for a price comparable to what Katfam charges for simply converting to DVD.
Sixth: there is a $15 upcharge on any tapes that exceed 2 hours. That is complete and utter insanity. None of the other services I have used ever had any such stipulation. They just transferred it like any other. If you have tapes longer than 2 hours (and who knows this, by the way because nobody has a VCR to watch them on anymore...) then THIS IS A TERRIBLE deal. You can easily, EASILY find a much better deal on Groupon for much better services.
Overall, my tapes were transferred. They did what I paid them to do. It was my own fault for not checking into the details before I bought this Groupon - although I do think I could make an issue of the return shipping charge since it is not stated anywhere in the fine print or on the voucher. The job Katfam did is comparable to what I would do at home if I had a dual VHS/DVD player. It was fine. But I won't use them again. And if you want really professional service, I don't recommend you do either.
