Experienced photographer Katie Klein, who has worked for celebrity photographer David LaChapelle, captures individuals, couples, and children in a style blending photojournalism and fine art. During the holiday-portrait session, broods of two adults with their children, owners of a well-behaved pet, or rival tennis players looking to bury the hatchet pose for wintry greetings during studio sessions that last about an hour. Although Klein does some direction and posing, the camera prefers as many natural interactions as possible, from unguarded glances to unscripted thumb-wrestling victories. Children each get their own portrait, and Klein suggests everyone bring a few changes of seasonal clothing that suggest individual tastes, frozen precipitation, or both. After the session, newly immortalized subjects get their favorite shot reproduced in the form of one 8”x10” print, two 5”x7” prints, and a sheet of eight wallet-size doppelgangers.
In homage to classic ‘40s photos, Klein engineers an in-studio Original Sweethearts portrait experience that includes about four hours of primping, styling, posing, and refreshments. During the provocative session, Klein helps models travel back in time with vintage clothing, period backgrounds, and props aided by the subject’s own items. Using highly photogenic Laura Mercier makeup, Klein styles faces and hair to meet bygone fashion standards and wins approval of a ghostly Edith Head. Lunch and champagne fuel the glamorous collaboration, which results in a matted and signed 16”x20” photo.
