Sailors learn to be experts at knot tying, from securing the vessel with a tight anchor hitch to securing the captain after he succumbs to madness and tries to eat his own hook hand. This Groupon is a mutinous bounty.
Choose Between Two Options
- $22 for a full-day single-kayak rental or a paddleboard rental with a lesson (up to a $60 value)
- $25 for a full-day double-kayak rental (a $55 value)
Kayak rentals can include a brief tutorial upon request, and paddleboard rentals include a beginner's lesson, which covers balance, maneuvering, and paddling technique, before guests set out to explore Clam Bayou Nature Preserve. There, they’ll glide through the preserve's shallow 1-mile throughway and nab sights of herons, fiddler crabs, and possibly manatees, eventually docking in Gulfport beach where they can browse shops along the boardwalk or settle along the shore to devour a picnic lunch.
Kayak Nature Adventures
From the moment seasoned nature tour guide Kurt Zuelsdorf first dipped his paddle into Clam Bayou, he knew the mangrove estuary would be the right place to set his kayak tours. But there was a catch—a garbage dump’s worth of rusting shopping carts and waterlogged plastic bags was strewn about the waterway. Undeterred, Kurt hit upon a clever cleanup strategy: people could launch his fleet of kayaks for free, so long as they toted a bag of garbage out of the bayou with them.
Numerous grants, media attention, and awards later, Kurt’s waterway cleanup program has reached its final stages. Now, kayakers and paddlers can freely navigate the mangrove channels, nabbing sights of manatees, herons, and tugboat captains hopelessly lost in the mangroves. An avid nature enthusiast who has kayaked waterways from Wisconsin to Florida, Kurt prizes Clam Bayou, citing the diversity of wildlife along the one-mile stretch. “It’s not like the zoo,” he says. “Every time you hit the water, it’s a completely different experience.”

“You may want to make sure the weather is nice with our ever-evolving Florida Summer weather, but as someone who grew up on the water but had never been kayaking, I was absolutely had a wonderful time experiencing the coast in a way I hadn't before. My girlfriend was completely unexperienced and the guide made her feel confident with his instructions and told us the way to go so that we started off with great nature/scenery and ended our trip by pulling up on a suggested beach and visiting a beach pub before returning.”
