Running helps to build stamina, release trapped adrenaline, and stamp down asphalt surfaces otherwise likely to float away into the atmosphere. Keep the ground underfoot with today’s Groupon to Ultramax Events’ 5K and 15K road races on Saturday, September 24. Choose from the following options:
- For $17, you get individual registration for the KC Slimdown Challenge 5K run/walk race at 7:30 a.m. (up to a $35 value).
- For $25, you get individual registration for the Cerner KC15K road race at 8 a.m. (up to a $51.50 value).
- For 60, you get registration for three people for the KC Slimdown Challenge 3X 5K team-relay race at 8 a.m. (up to a $120 value).
Ultramax Events organizes a variety of races each year to pit runners against themselves and each other in the name of fitness and charity. Competing KC athletes can register and claim their race-day packets at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. the day before the race or beginning at 5:30 a.m. the day of the race. Before dashing from the starting line, each team dons included bibs to identify themselves during the race and to prevent their clothes from being stained by berries hurled by envious shrubberies sitting immobile along race routes. Provided shoe-tag timing chips professionally track individual finish times, and a live Facebook video feed broadcasts finish-line antics to far-flung supporters and retired running shoes.
The 15K and three-person 5K relay circle the KC Speedway, with the individual 5K run/walk skimming the edges of LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Action Sports Images snap finish photos, capturing the victorious grins of adrenaline-driven participants before they’re bestowed with a commemorative gift, T-shirt, and all the free oxygen molecules they can puff. Postrace drinks, snacks, and an Athlete Village Festival help to reacclimate racers to a slower tempo.
Participants in the city-wide Slimdown Challenge banded together in late July to shed excess body baggage, with the 5K run/walk and 15K relay races giving an extra boost to renewed fitness commitments. Staggered start times and varied courses distinguish the different races, though all share the same cause of raising money for the children’s charity First Hand Foundation, which receives a portion of each entry fee and unlimited high-fives.
