Without frequent exposure to art, viewers may struggle to discern whether they're looking at an impressionist masterpiece or out a heavily smudged window. Start your eye training with today's Groupon: for $30, you get a three-hour BYOB art class at Kelly's Art & Frame in Alexandria, Virginia (a $65 value).
Original oil paintings, watercolors, and limited-edition prints by regional artists saturate the walls of Kelly's Art & Frame. During art classes within the 2,800-square-foot polychromatic gallery, painters of all skill levels animate blank 11"x14" canvases with acrylic paints and brushes provided by the studio. Pupils can bring in reference material depicting a subject, landscape, or famous coffee spill, or can email a photograph to the studio ahead of time so that professional artists can convert it into a drawing that's more easily transferable to canvas.
The studio equips budding van Goghs with all painting materials, an easel, and comestibles, and students may tote along a bottle of their favorite wine, beer, or melted Jello to invigorate creativity. Small class sizes of 16 students or fewer allow for a laid-back environment in which each student can interact personally with the professional artist on hand.
