Once accused of being clingy in a relationship, the only way to preserve receding romance is to grip it tighter. Buff up your reaching, grasping, and partner-keeping muscles with today’s Groupon: for $55, you get an introduction class and a five-climb pass, including equipment, at Kendall Cliffs (a $155 value) in Peninsula.
Kendall Cliffs boasts the only professionally designed rock gym in Ohio. Hit the vertical ground climbing with the Rock Gym 101 introduction class and immerse yourself in the most exciting indoor sport since jai alai on motorcycles. In this immersive two-hour lesson, first-time gravity defiers will master the basics of tying knots, belaying, rope-management skills, climbing commands, and using technical equipment. Once climbers pass the belaying test at the end of class, they are free to scale Kendall Cliffs' walls and are offered a personal mountain-goat assistant. The class is held Monday–Friday, 5 p.m.–7 p.m. and 7 p.m.–9 p.m. Armed with snappy new vocabulary, including climb on and smear, climbers can get to clipping carabiners with a five-climb pass to hone their new summit-searching skills with top rope climbing or bound over to the boulder for rope-free scaling.
The Nicros designed facility combines textured plywood and natural-looking rock surfaces. The 7,000 square feet of climbing surface has a peak of 35 feet, or 4.94 Shaquille O'Neals, and includes a peak height arch traveling the span of the building.
Climbers stand at the base of the textured plywood and rock surfaces that climb the walls of Kendall Cliffs' 7,000-foot space and picture themselves reaching the summit—a 35-foot high arch that reaches across to the opposite wall. Designed by Nicros, the facility presents varying gravitational challenges for scalers to mount, from tackling the bouldering cave to tickling the bouldering cave's petroglyphs. Intrepid and experienced instructors lead climbing classes, calibrated for varying skill levels and covering topics such as knot tying, belaying, bouldering, and sport routes.
