In 1930, smack-dab in the middle of American Prohibition, Henry Holbrook was sent to a federal penitentiary for bootlegging. He spent 17 years there—and even struck up a friendship with fellow bootlegger Al Capone—but that wasn't the end of the story for Henry's moonshine.

More than 70 years later, Henry's grandson resurrected the family recipes. And in 2015, the moonshine operation was up and running again: the Appalachian Mountain setting was the same, but this time the business was on the right side of the law. Today, the distillery welcomes visitors and hosts tastings of its spirits, which use whole fruits to achieve the most genuine flavor. With moonshine varieties ranging from traditional Corn Mist to sweet and tart Apple Pie, the cocktail possibilities are endless, but probably best enjoyed in a mason jar.
