Kidtown USA immerses children in a bright, open space surrounded by murals of Chicagoland and stocked with toys, play structures, and learning stations. The kid-friendly facility is full of equipment and furnishings that encourage activities fueled by exploration and creativity, such as playing make believe with a real chum or discussing contemporary nonfiction with an imaginary friend. Play areas include an indoor playground with a pirate ship and castle; a miniature city replete with a fire station, vet's office, and home; and a story time theater where teachers act out more than 200 prepared stories, allowing children to practice their reading by following the words on a big screen. Program participation is as flexible as the Play-Doh spine of a professional yoga instructor, and parents can choose between pay-by-the-hour drop-in sessions or longer classes. Kidtown USA came from the minds of educators and recreation specialists who created a program licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. Each location’s activity stations cater not only to entertaining kids, but also helping them develop skills for creative self-expression and social engagement. Kids explore the indoor play area, which consists of climbing structures—including a pirate ship and a train—before watching puppets act out classic kids’ tales such as Uncle Vanya Goes to the Zoo at Storytime Theater. Make Believe City’s open air and small, miniature rooms emulate imaginative settings such as a firehouse, veterinarian's office, or construction zone. Elsewhere at The Diner, red-and-chrome furniture and a classic checkerboard floor sets the stage for cooking lessons or snack time.
