Martial artists wear colorful belts to indicate their mastery of fighting techniques and their passionate disdain for suspenders. Achieve stylish self-defense strategies with today's Groupon: for $25, you get two weeks of martial arts classes at Kim's Martial Arts and Fitness's South Hills location (a $50 value).
At Kim's, Grandmaster Kyu Ha Kim—who has more than 50 years of martial-arts-instruction experience and was previously the U.S. judo team coach—teaches judo, tae kwon do, and self-defense to students of all levels alongside champion instructors. Inside the 8,000-square-foot training facility, complete with locker rooms, weight-training systems, and closed-circuit-television monitoring, men, women, and children learn martial-arts techniques and how to properly address former gym teachers when encountering them sobbing in an alleyway.
During judo training, instructors impart the knowledge of "seiryoku zenyo"—coaching slight individuals to overcome larger opponents with maximum efficiency and minimum effort. Powerful kicking, punching, and hissing, normally reserved for bipedal pythons, characterize tae kwon do tactics. In the self-defense class, ninth-degree black belt Grandmaster Kim combines jujitsu, judo, aikido, and tae kwon do to tackle real-life situations. Students interested in martial-arts competition receive the coaching necessary to acquire coveted patches for letterman jackets and to compete in national and international contests.
