  • Famous Big Fat Gyro
  • Choose from a robust dessert menu
  • 19-year track record of excellent service

Though they've invented the Olympics, political systems, and the Zorba music that gets played at least once during every baseball game, the Greeks have never been ones to rest on their laurels, which they also invented. Today's deal treats you to their crowning achievement: the gyro. For $5, you'll get $11 worth of anything on the authentic Greek menu at King Gyros, Citysearch's pick for Best Mediterranean Food in Columbus for 2009.

The most famous offering on King Gyros' menu is the Big Fat (and presumably Greek) Gyro ($7.99), an extra-large pita packed with 12 ounces of thin-sliced gyro meat and topped with gyro sauce, diced tomato, onion, banana peppers, black olives, and lettuce. If that isn't Greek enough for you, try the souvlake gyro ($4.19+), which is a gyro wrapped around a skewer of filet-mignon tips. You can order them by the sack (up to $34.95 for five BFGs), like Socrates always did, or with a side of fresh-cut chili cheese fries ($3.69).

The Greeks value hospitality even more than billowy white cotton shirts, so expect boisterous Rhodes-born owner Yanni Chalkias to serve up your feta burger ($5.50), dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) ($5.75), shishkabob ($7.95+), mousaka ($8.50+), and more with a maximum of smiles and conversation and a minimum of annoying new age music. Save room, though, for gourmet baklava with a drizzle of honey syrup ($4.25), the decadent strawberry cheesecake baklava ($4.25), or another selection from the commodious dessert menu.

The country hasn't introduced a new style of column in centuries, but the art of Greek food is very much alive and kicking and dancing in circles with Ya-Ya at its cousin's wedding. Treat your cruise ship's first mate or your entire frat house to the best Greek grub that Columbus has to offer.

About King Gyros

As an 8-year-old boy growing up in Greece, Yanni Chalkias first sunk his teeth into the food industry while helping his father with his spice business. Once the family moved to the United States, Chalkias worked at his father and uncles' restaurants throughout the '80s, picking up Greek family recipes through hard-learned personal experience, rather than the traditional method of stealing Zeus's cookbook from Mount Olympus.

In 1991, Chalkias started his own establishment, King Gyros Greek Restaurant, to serve his own spin on traditional family recipes, including his housemade chicken lemon soup. Grilled filet mignon tips pair with gyro sauce in the souvlaki, and a mélange of Attic flavors blend in the greek bowls, such as gyro meat, feta, and saffron rice. Recently renovated, King Gyros now sports a large dining room as well as a covered front patio that protects diners from rain, blazing heat, and paparazzi on eagle-back.
