The class was taught by a teenager who, when I became overheated and almost threw up, knew nothing of how to deal with it. I had to go outside and figure out how to cool down and not throw up so I could drive home. NO ONE ever contacted me to see if I was OK. That is a poorly managed business. I would like a refund.
There are some real highs and lows about this Groupon deal at ATA, hence the mediocre three star review. I also feel like lots of the cons are a real shame and hopefully they’ll use my feedback constructively to improve things in the future. They certainly lost further business from me due to the frustrating negative points: If you’re looking to get hot and sweaty quickly and not learn too much, then this deal is fine for you. I personally wanted to learn about kickboxing and return to my previous fitness levels but this didn’t happen.
Very nice staff, both Alex and Victor seem like lovely people.
Great gloves that are yours to keep. No secondary sweaty gloves here!
Nice facility with new equipment in excellent condition.
4 options of class times to choose from throughout the week.
Unstructured lessons. I continuously felt that the teachers just ‘winged’ the lessons. They certainly know their stuff, but having the lesson build on previous learning for pupils and actual teaching of specific ways to punch and kick never happened. For me this was an introduction back into fitness after having my third child. I’m a generally fit person and exercise three times a week, I just thought that kickboxing would build my core and strength, but it actually aggravated old injuries and left me feeling frustrated. After 8 lessons I don’t feel that I know how to side-kick or front-kick properly and certainly hadn’t built up any knowledge of kickboxing or specific moves. After continually trying to explain the type of exercises I could do and couldn’t due to injury / nursing a child I ended up often doing my own thing in order to keep moving.
No warm up / warm down / stretch - jumping into a full on side splits as the first stage of the lesson is in my opinion just dangerous and injury provoking.
Super loud music continuously so that you can’t hear the instructions from the teacher. Ever.
Inconsistent time keeping. Training times were consistent (I attended on Wednesday / Thursday at 8pm- 8:45pm) about 4 times out of 8. sometimes we ran over, annoyingly sometimes the class was cut short - as if this was doing us a favour… I came to train and to get fit, if I wanted to rest I would have stayed at home.
I also felt a little put out at the fact no-one took my Groupon voucher number in the beginning and was told that I could be trusted - great, only on the 6th week I was asked for it as if I must have done 8 by now and how come I wasn’t signing up to the club? After explaining my personal circumstances and expressing my wishes to purchase a number of classes in order to continue, I felt that suddenly my money wasn’t good enough because I couldn’t commit to lengthy periods and consequently I felt that the last training session was a waste of time - no workout in comparison to previous sessions and cut way short. Not a way to impress and leave a positive impression!
Sorry ATA but too many things let you down. I wish that I had come away with a more positive vibe so that I could have left a better review.
