Numerous ecological regulations impact our fish, yet few volunteers are interested in doing the hard work of registering them to vote. Canvass your local waterways with today's Groupon: for $59, you get a four-hour fly-fishing class and cookout at Adrian Lake from Kirk’s Fly Shop in Estes Park (a $120 value). The class is offered on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Classes are held indoors in inclement weather.
Owned and operated by Kirk and Laurie Bien, Kirk’s Fly Shop offers guided trips, instruction, and top-of-the-line equipment for outdoor adventurers. Up to 15 angling apprentices gather on the shores of Adrian Lake to learn the basics of fly fishing, including rigging, knot tying, and casting an alluring spell on errant fish. As their pupils practice new skills, the intrepid instructors impart enough sage fly-fishing wisdom so that it’s not uncommon for first timers to snag the Colorado Grand Slam of a brown, rainbow, brook, and cutthroat trout. Celebrate your newfound casting abilities at the post-class cookout of brats or hot dogs while warming frazzled fingers by the bonfire.
Kirks Fly Shop
When not outfitting customers with camping gear, fishing equipment, or trail-savvy llamas, Kirk, Luke, and Addy Bien can often be found out in a mountain stream in search of the elusive “Colorado Grand Slam”—the catch of brown, rainbow, brook, and cutthroat trout all in one day. The owners of Kirks Fly Shop, the Biens share their passion for the outdoors by guiding visitors to lakes and streams whether via hiking trails or on the back of a pack horse or a llama—an animal suited to traversing the high mountain terrain’s blockades of delicious grass.
