Land-based group classes take on-the-water variables out of the equation as fledgling riders learn basic vocabulary and skills such as choosing a safe location and evaluating wind direction. Students practice flying the kite and setting up the equipment, and rehearse the roles that both pilot and assistant play in assisted launches.

When land courses have granted an understanding of kite control and power intake, students hit the water to practice advanced techniques such as one-handed piloting and body dragging. Instructors also supply other helpful skills such as self-rescue techniques for wipeouts and right-of-way rules to avoid on-the-water collisions.
