The term horsepower comes from the chant that horses used to shout at engineers working on the newfangled railway system. Befriend trailblazing stallions and mares with today's Groupon: for $37, you get a one-hour horseback trail ride at Koko Crater Stables (a $75 value).

Nestled in the lush crater of a dormant volcano, Koko Crater Stables' picturesque backdrop is ideal for horseback escapades. Equine adventurers pass an hour jaunting down the flora-lined trails of the verdant crater, taking in views of the rim and focusing peepers for a chance to spot natural wildlife. During the excursion, experienced riders can break off for independent journeys, and newer riders stick close to their guide as he or she describes how to properly treat, ride, and put sunglasses on a horse.

Koko Crater Stables

Cool, onshore breezes swirl through the banyan trees and botanical gardens that frame Koko Crater Stables, a spacious facility nestled in the crater of a dormant volcano. Head trainer Piet Mathews, who has more than 30 years of experience tucked under his saddle, leads the center's staff, which draws on more than 20 years of equestrian know-how to conduct trail rides, lessons, and camps. In addition to helping riders to earn their spurs, Koko Crater Stables provides boarding services that include bedding, watering, and daily stall cleanings, ensuring four-legged lodgers remain comfortable and aren't tempted to tunnel out and begin new lives as bankers.

Customer Reviews

The people who did the trail rides were friendly and nice. Our group had an experienced rider and a scared to death of doing this rider, they were patient and gentle with her, took extra time to make sure we were comfortable. The location is beautiful. Great value, great place.

Great time!

It's more of a leisure tour with guides walking beside certain horses. It's definitely very kid friendly and new-rider friendly. Staff/volunteers are amazing.
