During lessons, riders learn to groom, tack up, and mount and dismount correctly before they learn proper riding techniques. Educational signs posted along trail offer riders interesting facts about the history of horses in Hawaii and the history of Koko Crater.

The trail ride takes guests past the crater, and also allows views of the ocean. Rides commence after a quick 5- to 10-minute lesson. All riders must wear long pants and covered shoes. Helmets will be provided free of charge. Trail-ride groups are limited to six riders.

Trail rides keep horses at a walking pace. During lessons, horses can walk, trot, cantor, and jump.

Koko Crater Stables

Cool, onshore breezes swirl through the banyan trees and botanical gardens that frame Koko Crater Stables, a spacious facility nestled in the crater of a dormant volcano. Head trainer Piet Mathews, who has more than 30 years of experience tucked under his saddle, leads the center's staff, which draws on more than 20 years of equestrian know-how to conduct trail rides, lessons, and camps. In addition to helping riders to earn their spurs, Koko Crater Stables provides boarding services that include bedding, watering, and daily stall cleanings, ensuring four-legged lodgers remain comfortable and aren't tempted to tunnel out and begin new lives as bankers.

Lovely Emma Jean and my ex-polo pony Chewy made for a lovely first time lesson. The instructor was kind, friendly and very appropriate for my level of riding. I definitely want to have more lessons. Mahalo.

Absolutely lovely experience for me and my 11 year old daughter. She got to ride under great instruction, then wash her horse and walk with it as it grazed. Wonderful instructors!
