Like a science-fiction saga, fusion cuisine begins with an attempt to unify far-flung cultures and is often enhanced with spices harvested from the giant sand worms of Arrakis. Make your stomach a peace offering with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of Latin fusion cuisine and drinks at Kon Tiki in South Tampa's Tahitian Inn.
Following the route of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl and his raft, which shares the restaurant's name, Kon Tiki's menu boldly unites the distant neighboring cuisines of South America and Polynesia. Taste buds take off on their own transpacific trek with such appetizers as tiki tuna tartare ($11), Mexican-style edamame ($5), and short-rib nachos, with crispy won-ton pontoons balancing braised beef, queso blanco, pico de gallo, and a Sriracha-aioli drizzle ($10). Supper ship-hands and migrating dolphins alike will throw ration requirements to the wind when main courses appear, such as the green curry fury, a tortilla pizza crowned with green-curry chicken, tomatoes, crumbled queso, and jalapeños ($11), or an herbivorous helping of sesame- and pumpkin-seed encrusted tofu ($16). Kon Tiki's flavor-infused teas and cocktails provide spicy after-dinner palates a tasty alternative to chewing on a fire blanket for heat relief.
Kon Tiki's earthy décor, set off by rich wooden dining tables, rattan seating, and a chic bar accented with smooth black stones, looks sleek thanks to flat-screen TVs, modern curved ceilings, and recessed lighting. If they'd rather trade the fresh interior for fresh air, patrons can unwind or release sea monkeys into larger captivity at next door's Torch Poolside Bar & Lounge, which offers drinks, scheduled live-music events, and an abbreviated menu from Kon Tiki (poolside bar open Thursday from 4 p.m.–9 p.m., Friday from 4 p.m.–11 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m.–11 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m.–3 p.m.).
Kon Tiki offers an abbreviated menu from Monday through Saturday, 3 p.m.–5 p.m.
