About Krav New York
When krav maga founder Imi Lichtenfeld developed the self-defense style, his motives were purely out of necessity. In the late 1930s, Lichtenfeld was a professional boxer and wrestler in Bratislava, Slovakia, who often took on the task of defending his neighborhood against anti-Semitic gangs. Through those encounters, he realized he needed a practical method of self-defense, and so began to develop the fundamentals of krav maga with the co-aims of remaining unharmed, following natural movements and reactions, and simultaneously defending and attacking.
Today, krav maga is practiced as the official self-defense style of the Israel Defense Forces, and is taught privately throughout the world. Grandmaster Haim Gidon, Lichtenfeld's chosen successor at the Israeli Krav Maga Association, oversees all aspects of Krav New York’s training curriculum. Under his leadership, Krav New York’s team not only helps to perpetuate proper training methods through practical techniques and realistic training scenarios, but also certifies new instructors.
