What You'll Get
Horsemanship was once a vital skill, much like the ability to avoid sailing off the end of the earth or the ability to discern which pizza trees were poisonous. Master an ancient art of survival with today's Groupon: for $50, you get a one-hour private trail and arena ride with a choice of a pony or horse at Kristas’ Corral (a $100 value). Participants must be 7 or older.
Pintsize riders trot atop quarter horses and ponies at Kristas’ Corral, where experienced instructors teach introductory lessons in Western-style riding, pairing picturesque panoramas with edifying games designed to impart the sport’s fundamentals. First, students select a steed after perusing a stable of whinnying luminaries that sport such playful names as Curly, Bunny, and Charlie Brown, who was named for his inability to make out adults' garbled speech.
During each one-hour session, pupils spend 15 minutes acquainting themselves with their horse at the barn before saddling up and spending 45 minutes traversing the area’s lush, retina-grabbing landscapes. Once in the arena, riders can cycle through a number of equestrian games designed to teach balance and control, teaming up with their mounts for interactive games of horse rings and barrel riding. A skills assessment concludes each lesson, allowing parents to determine whether to buy their kids ponies or sawhorses for Christmas.
