Service, crab cakes, lamb chops and duck were all excellent. Unlikely location and streetscape but nice inside.

What You'll Get

French chefs were the first to recognize the potential of the egg, overcoming the stereotype that it was hard-boiled and always broke. Champion food rights like a Frenchman with today's Groupon: for $49, you get a French dinner for two at La Barrique (up to a $113.70 value). The meal includes:

  • Two appetizers (up to a $31.90 value)
  • Two entrees (up to a $63.90 value)
  • Two desserts (up to a $17.90 value)

Belgian chef Jean-Paul Bingoni sustains La Barrique's 60-year tradition of classic French bistro cuisine upon the polished tables of this elegant café. Meals begin traditionally with the velvety beef broth of french-onion soup or white asparagus dappled with nutmeg and drizzled in buttery Serge Gainsbourg lyrics. An entree of mussels bathes in one of eight fragrant stocks including beer and bacon, white wine and mustard, or shallots and chorizo, and sports stacks of fries to reward dining partners for their shucking assistance. Nimble fingers gild tender duck legs in an orange-ginger sauce, pairing them with a humble yet rich potato-and-cheese gratin, and braised lamb shanks continue the celebration of delicious gams by swathing the tender morsels in a luxurious red-wine sauce. During dessert, a sturdy ramekin protects raspberry Grand Marnier soufflé from falling to attacks by foreign forks, and ladyfingers beckon from the tiramisu's creamy layers of amaretto and mascarpone to distract diners as it steals their ice cream.

Paneled in dark wood and accented by red drapes, napkins, and seat cushions, the romantic café glows with light reflecting from the bar's tin ceiling and off displays filled with a curated selection of organic French and international wines. The chic European dining destination is snugly nestled between 5th and 6th Avenues in New York's fashion district, making it a prime spot for people watching or literally romancing a skirt.
