Serena Williams grunts, a Portuguese teenager grunts, we all grunt for Groupon Cream. Today’s Groupon gets you up to 52% off a ticket to the LA Women’s Tennis Championships. The championship has hosted the most memorable matches with the top female tennis players in the world, including Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, and five-time champion (a tournament record-holder) Martina Navratilova.
In case you didn’t know, tennis is basically the most entertaining live sport to watch. In person, the speed of play is so exhilarating, spectators often can’t help but grunt themselves. The only thing better than a beautifully executed backhand winner at the end of a long, dramatic point is if it comes with a cherry on top (tennis slang for grunt).
And as far as live tennis action goes, this tournament features the best players in the world. Last year, number-one-ranked player Dinara Safina earned the crown at the 8,000-seat tennis stadium at The Home Depot Center. She’s competing again this year along with WTA Tour superstars Maria Sharapova and 2007 champ Ana Ivanovic. Add Nadia Petrova, Vera Zvonareva, and more, and this year’s tournament has 11 of the top 15 tennis players in the world, as well as the world’s tallest wheelchair for short, disabled line judges.
This Groupon gets you lower box seats, so you’ll be close to the action. Click here to view the seating map. Why is LA Women’s Tennis Championships Important?
The LA Women’s Tennis Championships is part of the Olympus US Open Series, which links the summer hard-court tournaments to the famed US Open. This year’s tournament marks the fifth year that players competing in the Olympus US Open Series tournaments will be vying for bonus prize money at the US Open. Players competing in the summer season of tennis at the participating Sony Ericsson WTA Tour tournaments will receive Olympus US Open Series points and certificates of participation. The points will ultimately earn the series winner the opportunity to double her US Open prize purse. With all those financial incentives, you can expect some especially passionate grunting.
Beginner's Guide to Tennis
Most people know only the most basic aspects of tennis (serve ball, return ball, run, etc.). To truly appreciate the intricacies of the game, it helps to have a firm understanding of the rules:
- Players start on opposite sides.
- Players agree who plays first (in subsequent games, winner starts).
- Players alternate turns, dropping one checker into any of the slots.
- When players connect two adjacent checkers, it is called a deuce.
- Game is played until one player wins by getting four checkers in a row (either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) or there are no more moves to be made, which results in a draw.
