When Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford wrote their off-Broadway musical I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road in 1978, it was a true-blue groundbreaker, considered a feminist declaration even though that was not the original intent. Now, the Laguna Playhouse presents a compelling two-act hybrid that includes the original work and then a subsequent follow-up musical. In Act 1, the original musical introduces Heather, a divorced 39 year old songwriter trying to stage her comeback with a new collection of songs that are sharply personal. Then, in Act 2 of I'm Still Getting My Act Together, Heather and her band are revisited ... 30 years later. What truly makes this performance special is the fact that Gretchen Cryer will reprise the role of Heather, all these years later, in this production's second act.
