On October 5, the Lake County Chamber of Commerce's annual Oktoberfest combines the staples of the German tradition, including beer drinking and German folk music, with an array of exciting events that range from costume contests to pretzel eating contests. One of the highlights is the Dachshund Derby, which enlists little-legged pooches (who are at least part Dachshund) to race on safety-conscious courses to win prizes for their owners. Meanwhile, visitors can enjoy locally crafted brews in their souvenir glass.

About Lake County Chamber of Commerce
Lake County Chamber of Commerce not only represents an alliance of small businesses in the area, but works to build a "stronger economy and improved quality of life" for the residents and visitors of Lake County as a whole. To achieve this, they do what you'd expect a chamber of commerce to do: work with the community and volunteers to help promote community events, organize volunteer factions, and represent business interests at all government levels. Of course they also host mixers and other networking opportunities for local professionals in the community. They work with other community organizations to host numerous shindigs throughout the year, including the pear festival—which celebrates the production of one of the region's signature fruits with exhibits, a craft show, and a parade—and the Konocti Challenge, a cycling event held around a the largest lake in California. They also borrow a few traditions from other locales to further loosen neckties throughout the community. For instance, they take a page out of Europe's book and oversee an annual Oktoberfest that features beer tastings, live German music, dachshund races, dog and people costume contests, and arts and craft vendors, all in Historic Downtown Lakeport.
