Tom Lehrer may be a genius, having earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Harvard at 18, the age most kids are just graduating from high school. But perhaps his greatest contribution was as a singer-songwriter who wrote wickedly witty (and sometimes naughty) songs satirizing the social ills of his day – the A-bomb, racism, pollution, pornography, the military, the Boy Scouts and, of course, mathematics. Tomfoolery is an energetic music hall-style revue featuring nearly 30 of his sassy songs, which still ring true today. From a nun singing “Vatican Rag” to a ’50s heartthrob’s rendition of “National Brotherhood Week,” the singing, dancing and comedy numbers of Landmark Musical Theatre’s production of Tomfoolery at San Francisco’s The Eureka Theatre spare no one and provide a great opportunity to sit back at laugh at ourselves.
