What You'll Get
The bond between rider and horse unifies the two into a single fence-leaping entity of legendary efficiency, rivaled only by the elusive Australian man-garoo. Spring into modern lore with today's Groupon: for $32, you get a one-hour group horseback-riding lesson or a half-hour private lesson for beginning riders at Larkspur Farm in Wilton, near Scotts Corner in Pound Ridge (a $65 value). Though Larkspur Farm provides helmets, all riders must arrive wearing hard-soled boots that cover to the ankle.
Larkspur Farm maintains a friendly team of ready-to-ride horses and ponies, all of whom can be found gallivanting across a 151-acre property of forests and grassy paddocks. The 36-horse facility's equestrian experts instruct aspirant riders year-round, seven days a week, starting all novices with 30-minute private sessions that cover basics such as telling the difference between a horse and a picture of Paul Lynde. More advanced mounties can join small group classes for a full hour of steed coaching. Pound the dirt into dust in the 80'x200' indoor arena, or give rein and stretch legs in one of the all-weather outdoor rings, which––unlike stop signs––continue to exist even when it's raining outside. Larkspur's long, white barn houses three dozen stalls, three tack-and-trunk rooms, and a large wash stall with hot and cold water. Expansive, covered sand paddocks and four sprawling grass pastures ensure that horses remain happy and healthy even when not being ridden, with plenty of room to engage in such horseplay classics as racing barrels and throwing human shoes.
