According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, runaway and homeless youth experience a higher risk of sexual assault and exploitation, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS infection, and suicide attempts than the general youth population. As the result of strict admission policies or lack of beds, few homeless young people are able to secure space and resources in emergency shelters, making them more vulnerable to assault, illness, and suicide. In addition to public-policy advocacy, The Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) works in DC and Maryland to provide immigrant and minority youth in low-income or homeless situations with multilingual, culturally sensitive programming that includes educational enhancement, social services, and workforce and life-skills training.
LAYC's Street Outreach Program (SOP) connects runaway and homeless youth ages 13–24 with crucial services to help them work toward self-sufficiency and stability, housing, and family re-unification. To improve the quality of life for homeless young people who may not otherwise have access to basic resources, LAYC provides survival kits that include personal-hygiene supplies, first-aid kits, contraceptives, snacks, and information about LAYC services.
