About Laura S. Walker State Park
Laura S. Walker was an accomplished writer, teacher, civic leader, and naturalist who left an indelible mark on 19th-century Georgia. With such a diverse array of occupations, it's only fitting that the state park bearing her name should offer a similarly wide-ranging array of fresh-air pursuits.
The 626-acre park, which is situated just north of the enormous Okefenokee Swamp, boasts a 120-acre lake that's open to boaters, water-skiers, kayakers, and anglers. Visitors can also walk or bike around the lake's edge while keeping a lookout for the many creatures that call the park home, including gopher tortoise, warblers, and great blue herons. They might also spot carnivorous pitcher plants, which swallow up insects and old geometry tests. Golfers, meanwhile, can hunt the 18-hole Lakes course for the elusive triple eagle.
