As a part of Light Opera Oklahoma's three-part "Summer of Love" series, Patience is the wacky adapted version of Gilbert and Sullivan's classic comic opera. Instead of the original 19th-century setting in England, this musical satire takes place in 1967 and takes on a different aesthetic movement during the Vietnam War. A group of young maidens attend music school, and, rather than focusing on their testosterone-oozing boyfriends, they find consolation in the attraction of two abstract poets. One is a colorfully artistic author and the other is a relaxed-to-the-max guitar player, war protestor, and the hippest of hippie pigeonholes. The ladies help an agricultural student named Patience discover the spicy ingredients to fulfill her ultimate Summer of Love: love, heartbreak, and hallucinogenic reprieve.
Light Opera Oklahoma is a non-profit organization that began promoting classic musical comedies and professional performances in 1983. Patience will be performed in the John H. Williams Theatre in the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, a 437-seat proscenium theater that's intimate enough for excellent acoustics and provides full-court views of all alley-oops and behind-the-backstage passes from every seat.
