Hancock Golf Course
Playing a round at Hancock Golf Course is about more than just attempting to score a par 35 or lower. It’s also about experiencing some of Austin’s history. Founded in 1899 by Lewis Hancock, the city’s former mayor, this course stands as one of the oldest in the state. In addition to this distinction, the original site of the Austin Country Club used to call Hancock home, and one of Austin’s most-loved golfing pros, Harvey Penick, started his career as a caddy here. He went on to coach the Longhorns in 21 Southwest Conference golf championships.
Of course, even if you don’t give a hoot about history, Hancock still delivers. Its nine holes are spread over scenic rolling hills and the snaking waters of Waller Creek. And though the course is a bit small by modern standards, it still maintains a lot of 19th-century charm thanks to its small, immaculately manicured greens and its unwavering support for President McKinley.
