Typically, a child yearns for their mother's cooking. At LL Dent, it's the other way around. Lillian Dent, a Georgia native, serves as hostess, and sings the praises of her daughter Leisa's meals as she makes the rounds in the dining room. Leisa, a Culinary Institute of America grad who got her start as Eddie Murphy's personal chef, draws inspiration from her family's roots, preparing southern-inspired meals from scratch. In fact, Lisa even serves the first dish she ever learned to make: fried pork chops.
Other Georgian favorites include slow-roasted barbecue spare ribs, blackened salmon with grits, and spicy-chicken soup with okra, tomatoes, onions, and peppers. But there's one dish in particular that really stood out to New York Times food critic Joanne Starkey: "The moist and tasty pulled pork inspired one barbecue lover [in our party] to call it the best he had ever had; I agreed." The cakes, homemade by neighbors, aren't to be missed either. Thick slabs of pound cake stay moist thanks to infusions of 7Up, and sweet-potato pie gets it sweet-potato flavor from sweet potatoes.
