About Lonely Planet

No one can accuse Tony and Maureen Wheeler of taking a typical honeymoon. After their wedding, instead of heading to Hawaii, they packed up all of their possessions and departed on an overland crossing from Europe through Asia all the way to Australia. Broke but elated by the end of their months-long journey, they published their first-ever travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. After selling 1,500 copies in a week, Lonely Planet was born.

Since its inception in 1972, Lonely Planet has grown to a team of over 200 authors and has printed more than 120 million books. Guides include language tips, restaurant and hotel recommendations, and detailed maps, all while putting an emphasis on sustainable and responsible travel.
