Riding a bike on land is fun for mermen and a portion of cycling enthusiasts, but riding a bike on water is fun for all bipedal creatures, including the dignified ostrich. Master the water without wetting your feathers with today's deal: for $10, you get a one-hour hydrobike rental at Long Beach Hydrobikes. Open for rentals 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, hydrobikes launch from the docks on Alamitos Bay, near Khoury's Restaurant in Long Beach.
Pedal by gentle pedal, hydrobikers explore Alamitos Bay in a whole new way. Armed with a detailed map, riders are free to navigate their manual machine to nearby bird sanctuaries, seasonal jellyfish coves, or open seas of tread-worthy surf. Each hydrobike is designed to prop riders high above the salty spray, which means travelers can traverse in swimsuits, street clothes, or three-piece suits for one highly unconventional fishing trip. Romantics can pack their picnic lunch in the on-board storage console, stow their sparkling soda in the cup holder, and tie the red-and-white-checkered blanket around their necks for a woefully inefficient, yet surprisingly stylish cape.
Hydrobikes coast at a cool 3 mph and cruise up to 7 mph at full steam, providing ample mileage across the hour. For extended trips, riders can tack on an extra hour for $15 or rip the fabric of space-time for the cost of a college physics class.
Reservations are required. Must be 18 years or older unless accompanied by an adult (but you may ride on a separate bike). Must sign a waiver. 400 lbs max.
Long Beach Hydrobikes opened recently, so there aren't many reviews available, but four Yelpers give it a five-star average:
Long Beach Hydrobikes
One way to get an exceptionally close look at picturesque Alamitos Bay is to ride atop its churning surf on one of Long Beach Hydrobikes's stable, pedal-powered water cycles. The company ensures that renters catch the bay's most noteworthy sights, providing them with a map detailing the location of a bird sanctuary as well as a cove where jellyfish delicately billow in certain months.
Avid pedalers generally cruise at speeds of up to seven miles per hour, exercising bodies with a workout that takes advantage of water resistance to jettison excess calories out to sea. As there is virtually no risk of capsizing, riders may wear anything from a bathing suit to a water-soluble prom dress. The hydrobikes come equipped with storage compartments, drink holders, and a wealth of extra space to invite pets along for the ride, free of charge.
