About Los Olivos Norte
When Cecilia Corral encouraged her husband, Tomas, to move their family out of Mexico in 1919, it was to spare her sons the arduous labor in the mines. Upon arriving in Arizona, Tomas helped build a unique storefront that over the years was used as a bakery, a tavern, a pool hall, and a chapel, among other things. With this, the couple unwittingly set in motion what would become a family tradition for more than six decades.
Several years later, Tomas and his family went back and bought the storefront that he worked on, and turned it into a restaurant called Los Olivos. Today, the second and third generations of the Corral family are there tending bar, seating guests, and making from-scratch tortillas and salsas in the kitchen. Their menu includes Corral specialties such as sizzling seasoned fajitas in a family-recipe sauce, and machaca, shredded dry beef sauteed with fresh veggies. More upscale entrees include broiled halibut in tomato sauce, which pays homage to the Corral family's Sonoran roots, which normally only show if they have their shoes off.
