Los Sarapes’ owners, the Marin family, are south-of-the-border specialists whose Horsham eatery earned a “very good to excellent” 2010 food rating from Zagat. Sauces, salsas, and guacamole are made in-house daily, providing the crucial foundation for dishes piled high with fresh, flavorful meats and produce. The family-favorite appetizer banderillas ahogadas consists of small, crispy corn taquitos filled with shredded chicken, rolled up, and topped with sour cream, hot sauce, queso fresco, and cilantro ($7). Main courses, such as chuleta Oaxaca (grilled pork tenderloin medallions sautéed with potatoes, smothered in a spicy pasilla pepper sauce with manchego cheese au gratin, and served with arroz verde (green rice) and refried black beans; $16) and chalupas (shredded chicken, shredded beef, or vegetarian; $15), prove carnivores and vegetarians can get together and adapt thumb wrestling for the big toe. All diners will want to wash their spicy food down with a crisp, cold beverage from the chic margarita and tequila bar. The gem-toned bar offers a variety of wines, beers, liquors, and more than 50 tequilas that can be sampled in flights any night of the week.
Los sarapes is a Spanish word meaning something that covers you and makes you feel warm, such as a blanket or sunburnt blobfish. The Marin family adopted this name to convey a sense of warmth to their diners, welcoming them into the family home. The restaurant décor revolves around warm-toned walls, casual and comfortable seating, and personal touches, such as a collection of native arts and crafts. Call to make a reservation.
