Though there are now dozens of wineries in the great horse state, the first wines to come out of Kentucky were really just bottles of bourbon dyed with red and blue food coloring. Enjoy the real deal with today's side deal: for $25 you get a wine tasting and winery tour for four, as well as four 18-ounce souvenir wine glasses from Lovers Leap Vineyards & Winery in Lawrenceburg, KY (a $60 value).
Lovers Leap wines have been pleasing pallets and collecting accolades since the first production in 2001. Today the vineyard spans thirty acres and boasts more than ten vino varietals. Take a guided tour with one of the dedicated staff to get a behind the scenes look at the giant steel and oak barrels that produce sweet nectar of Kentucky's unique terroir, but be leery of wine-flavored gum that could turn you into a giant human grape.
The tasting room's high ceilings, rustic wooden beams, and deep ruby color make you feel as though your paddling around in a wine filled oak barrel. Join your friends at the bar for a sampling of the 2010 Kentucky State Fair Gold winner, their 2008 Riesling ($11.99 for a bottle). Long and cold fermentation highlight the hints of fruit and lemongrass and give this white a delicate, clean finish. Warm vanilla aromas with berry and black cherry notes make up their signature Merlot ($13.99), while their Sloppy Seconds blend ($9.99) offers a light-bodied option for winos who believe in second chances. Each group of four gets four Lovers Leap wine glasses to keep, though telling your friends you won them by holding a barrel stand the longest is optional.
