What You'll Get

Choose from Four Options

  • $413 for a weekday open-water scuba certification class ($790 value)
  • $413 for a weekend open-water scuba certification class ($790 value)

Using a provided PADI Open-Water Diver course manual and accompanying DVD, students learn basic dive concepts, and then arrive at the dive shop for quizzes and a discussion session with instructors. After a final exam the next morning, groups of no more than six students jump right into hands-on instruction. Following an overview of basic dive techniques in the dive shop’s pool, instructors lead students to a private lake for their introductory open-water dive. The next day, students head back out to the lake for their check-out dives, which result in certification and, if they’re lucky, a new set of gills.

Weekday classes are available on October 8–10, 15–17, and 22–24 and include a classroom session on Wednesday from 7:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m., an all-day pool-and-dive session on Thursday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and an all-day lake-diving session on Friday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Weekend classes are available October 17–19 and 24–26 and include a classroom session on Friday from 7 p.m.– 10 p.m., an all-day pool-and-dive session on Saturday from 9 a.m.–6 p.m., and an all-day lake-diving session on Friday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

The course includes classroom instruction and materials, breathing regulators, air tanks, compasses, weights, and weight belts. Students must purchase their own masks, fins, and snorkels.

  • $290 for a weekend Adventure Diver scuba certification class ($495 value)

This class is reserved for individuals who already have their open-water certification, and who seek their Adventure Diver Certification. Following a morning of classroom work, participants head to the lake to take three specialty dives—Navigation, Peak Performance Bouyancy, and Search and Recovery. Weekday classes are available from 1–6 p.m. on October 20 and 28; the weekend class is available from 1–6 p.m. on October 12.

About Lowcountry Scuba

Scuba divers glide amid the underwater wreckage just off the coast of Charleston. They flit through gaps in decommissioned military APCs, a deck-boat, and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter, all encrusted with starfish and barnacles. Other fish may join them as they drift around the debris of an old wooden schooner, float over a massive natural limestone ledge, or paddle around vacation spots.

These are just some of the sites Lowcountry Scuba visits on its dive charters through the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Before Lowcountry's customers can reach this step, however, they must train under one of the dive shop's PADI-certified scuba instructors. The center introduces students to the scuba-diving craft through Discover Scuba classes, hands-on sessions held in the pool or in the calm waters of a private lake with a strict no-sea-serpent policy. Instructors also teach to PADI standards with classes ranging from open-water diver certification to specialty classes in nitrox-enriched air and rescue diving.

Meanwhile, dive-shop staff outfit customers for excursions. These knowledgeable technicians can field questions about nearly any item, and supply equipment not only for diving but for spearfishing and lobstering as well.
