Learning to create something on your own can lead to feelings of independence, a sense of accomplishment, and the ability to craft a new companion for a garrulous, dishonest marionette. Bring fresh abilities to life with today's Groupon: for $39, you get an advanced melt-and-pour soap-making class at Luisa New York in Thornwood (a $145 value).
Luisa New York's handcrafted aromatic soaps have earned the shop a place on Westchester Magazine's 2011 Best of Westchester and Westchester Health & Life's Top Ten Cosmetics Stores lists. The melt-and-pour class, which takes place each Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., introduces students of all levels to specialized methods and whimsical shaping abilities used in soap making. In a capacious studio, pupils learn to combine hard melt-and-pour products with gentle soap cream that surrounds skin with softness like a blitz by a lamb's football team.
Pupils draw upon an arsenal of natural, vegan ingredients used by the shop's owner, engineer and scientist Gili Zilca, in her own products. Wielding a master's degree in applied chemistry, Gili draws upon a background in hard science and extensive experience to lead students to newfound knowledge. At the end of the session, sudsy docents tote home three sweet-smelling, dessert-shaped soaps, whose delicate fragrances draw even tenured finger-painting professors to scrub their mitts. The course does not require any previous soap-making experience.
