there isn't much info on your website. What is this exactly? Someone with a car "volunteers" to play taxi? So there has to be someone out there willing to drive where I'm going when I'm going? Like if I needed a ride at 4am there has to be someone in my area willing to drive me where I need to go at that time? How does this work exactly?

Yes, I eventually found the FAQ section, which addresses the time questions, but what about the other part of my question? If I sign up, am I at the mercy of luck and chance that someone will be available in the area at the time I need them and is willing to go where I need to go essentially? If I need a "Real" taxi I can just call one. With this service there is no guarantee that I will get a ride?

Rides are subject to availability. Regarding what to do when there's not a Lyft available, here is what the FAQ states: "Lyft is in high demand and drivers are frequently completing rides, so the best thing to do is keep the app open and look for available drivers to appear near you. We're working hard to grow the driver community to make getting a Lyft easier and easier."
