Botox or Filler?: Choosing the Right Beauty Injection
Botox or fillers? Those seeking youthful skin often have to choose. Check out this Groupon guide to smooth out the wrinkles in your decision.
Though both can help turn back the clock on an aging face, Botox and dermal fillers work in quite different ways and are effective against different types of wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are fine, shallow lines that usually start to appear in your 20s or 30s. They form where the skin crinkles during facial expressions—for instance, the glabella between the eyebrows or the crow’s-feet areas around the eyes. Botox works best on dynamic wrinkles because it relaxes the facial muscles, giving the skin a rest. Without muscles tugging to and fro all day, the fine lines in the target area slowly fade away, giving the skin a more youthful appearance. The effect of a Botox injection usually lasts three to six months.
More common in patients in their 40s and 50s, static wrinkles are deeper lines that won’t fade with rest or sleeping on a pillowcase made from dryer sheets. They’re not caused by frowns and smiles, but rather by a loss of volume in the deeper layer of the skin. Dermal fillers such as Juvéderm, Radiesse, and Restylane can help fill in these declivities, usually with a naturally derived substance such as hyaluronic acid. Depending on the brand, the effects can last from a few months to more than a year. Some doctors believe that combining them with Botox can extend the look further since there are fewer muscle contractions to disperse the filler.
