Highly acclaimed Lyric Opera entertains operaholics with an array of tuneful stage fare every season, frequently selling out its celebrated productions. Puccini’s The Girl of the Golden West, the operatic equivalent of a spaghetti Western, tells the tale of a love triangle between a sultry saloon owner, a carousing constable, and a disguised desperado much like those who still inhabit the American West’s rowdy Disneylands. While not as well-known as some of Puccini’s other works, such as La Bohème or Madama Butterfly, this opera shares many of the themes and features that fans will instantly recognize, including unrequited love, courage and cowardice, morally dubious men in uniform, and strong female leads. The Girl of the Golden West is performed in the expansive, art deco Civic Opera House—the second-largest auditorium in North America, with enough space for 3,600 opera lovers and their brass spittoons.
