Though the surrounding world may have changed dramatically in the past 80 years, MacAlpine’s Soda Fountain still looks mostly as it did when it opened in 1929. A row of stools stand at a long bar, where malt shop attendants pour fountain sodas, scoop out sundaes, and blend shakes with flavors from the numerous bottles of syrup stored behind them. Spinning ceiling fans keep the cafe cool, and a movie-theater-style marquee tells diners the day’s dinner selection. The staff even dons old-fashioned uniforms, complete with a hat, suspenders, and Hoover for President bow tie, to further strengthen the throwback feel.
